These days, QR tickets are one of the main ways to pay for public transport in Yerevan, making your commutes fast and completely cashless.
The unified ticketing system uses two types of QR tickets: static and dynamic. Let’s find out what a QR ticket actually is, the difference between the two, and how they work.
What is a QR ticket, and how does it work
A QR ticket is a graphic code generated right when you buy it. To ride, all you need to do is scan it using the QR scanner installed in the transport vehicle.
Every QR ticket has two different timeframes․
- Activation period — the timeframe within which you need to scan the ticket for the very first time,
- Validity period, which shows how long the ticket remains active after that first scan.
Tickets come in static and dynamic forms.
Dynamic QR ticket: personal, modern, secure
The dynamic QR ticket is a fresh, innovative take on digital tickets.
It comes with a few important features․
it refreshes every 30 seconds,
it is available only inside the Telcell Wallet app,
screenshots or screen recordings are not allowed,
it cannot be shared or passed on to anyone else,
it can only be scanned once every 30 minutes in the same vehicle or station.
Which tickets have a dynamic QR code․
- 180 minutes
- 1 day
- 1 week
- 1 month
- 3 months
- 1 year
This is done for one simple reason: to protect the ticket from misuse. Before, it was impossible to track whether multiple people were using the same QR code. The dynamic QR was designed to solve this issue. Dynamic QR tickets require a constant internet connection, since the code refreshes every 30 seconds and works only within the Telcell Wallet app.
Starting March 1, all the tickets mentioned above, except for the 180-minute option, which includes 3 trips, offer unlimited rides and are valid for one person only.
In short, a single ticket cannot be used by two or more passengers at the same time. The dynamic QR is what enforces this rule.
Static QR ticket: savable, shareable, convenient
It is created once and does not change over time, which means it․
can be screenshotted,
saved as an image or a PDF file,
sent to someone else,
printed and used in paper form.
Which tickets have a static QR code․
- Single-ride ticket (150 AMD)
- 10-ride ticket pack (1500 AMD)
- Airport ticket (500 AMD)
A static QR ticket is the best option when you want to buy a ticket for someone else, for example for your parent, child or guest. Just share the QR ticket or a photo of it so that it can be scanned in transport or in the metro.
